What decides it

  • A drone under 250 g still needs operator registration if it has a camera or other sensor able to capture personal data, unless it is a toy under Directive 2009/48/EC.confirmed on the cited page
  • Display the operator number (without the three secret digits) on every drone, and upload the full string into the remote identification system where there is one.confirmed on the cited page
  • Carry the pilot certificate and the registration confirmation: being unable to show them while flying is an offence (300 EUR), and so is refusing them to the police (up to 300 EUR).confirmed on the cited page
  • The registered operator must be at least 18. Remote pilots must be at least 16, except with a C0 toy in A1, a self-built drone under 250 g, or under direct supervision; minors fly under an adult's registration.confirmed on the cited page
  • Use only radio equipment made for the EU market: the radio regulator warns that drones bought for Asian or US markets may not be used in EU countries, and radio equipment may operate only under an individual or general frequency authorisation.confirmed on the cited page

Permits tied to a place or a time

These do not change the country's colour; they decide whether a particular flight is legal where and when you want it.

  • Within 5 km of the airports of Bratislava, Košice, Piešťany, Poprad-Tatry and Žilina (up to 120 m), only specific-category flights are allowed: no open-category flying. At Piešťany, Poprad-Tatry and Žilina this applies during tower hours.
  • 85 zones around defence sites (RUAS013M to RUAS098M, ground to 500 m, since 18 August 2026): flights only with the Ministry of Defence's prior consent and with Remote ID.
  • In every national park and every other area with the third, fourth or fifth degree of protection (nature reserves, natural monuments), flying lower than 300 m above the highest obstacle within 600 m needs the consent of the nature authority (the district office in the regional seat). It is a national rule under the nature act, and TANAP states that drones are covered.
  • Any flight outside the open category needs a specific-category operational authorisation from the authority of the state where you are registered: 600 EUR at DÚ, and only SORA 2.5 risk assessments since 1 May 2026.

Before you fly, in order

  1. A drone under 250 g still needs operator registration if it has a camera or other sensor able to capture personal data, unless it is a toy under Directive 2009/48/EC.
  2. An operator number from your EASA state of residence is valid in Slovakia; an operator may not be registered in more than one member state.
  3. Display the operator number (without the three secret digits) on every drone, and upload the full string into the remote identification system where there is one.
  4. Carry the pilot certificate and the registration confirmation: being unable to show them while flying is an offence (300 EUR), and so is refusing them to the police (up to 300 EUR).
  5. Any flight outside the open category needs a specific-category operational authorisation from the authority of the state where you are registered: 600 EUR at DÚ, and only SORA 2.5 risk assessments since 1 May 2026.
  6. Stay within 120 m of the closest point of the earth's surface, except when overflying an obstacle; in class G airspace within 120 m above the highest obstacle within 30 m of the drone.
  7. Keep a safe distance from people and never fly over assemblies of people; the subcategory distances are those of Regulation (EU) 2019/947, Part A.
  8. Keep the drone in visual line of sight, except in follow-me mode or with a UA observer.
  9. At night, fly only with a green flashing light switched on.
  10. Within 5 km of the airports of Bratislava, Košice, Piešťany, Poprad-Tatry and Žilina (up to 120 m), only specific-category flights are allowed: no open-category flying. At Piešťany, Poprad-Tatry and Žilina this applies during tower hours.
  11. In the rest of those five control zones the open category may fly without clearance only below 30 m above ground, or beside a building up to its height within 30 m of it. Higher flights need a specific-category authorisation, notice to air traffic control 24 hours ahead and phone clearance 15 minutes before take-off.
  12. In an aerodrome traffic zone (ATZ), fly only after coordination with the aerodrome operator, in visual line of sight, giving way to crewed aircraft.
  13. 85 zones around defence sites (RUAS013M to RUAS098M, ground to 500 m, since 18 August 2026): flights only with the Ministry of Defence's prior consent and with Remote ID.
  14. Check the permanent and temporary UAS geozones before every flight. The Ministry of Transport declares short-notice prohibition zones, for example PUAS0154M on 3 October 2026; breaching a geozone costs 2,000 EUR if intentional, 100 EUR if negligent.
  15. In every national park and every other area with the third, fourth or fifth degree of protection (nature reserves, natural monuments), flying lower than 300 m above the highest obstacle within 600 m needs the consent of the nature authority (the district office in the regional seat). It is a national rule under the nature act, and TANAP states that drones are covered.
  16. FPV flight is allowed only in subcategory A3 and only with a UA observer.
  17. Use only radio equipment made for the EU market: the radio regulator warns that drones bought for Asian or US markets may not be used in EU countries, and radio equipment may operate only under an individual or general frequency authorisation.
  18. Filming identifiable people is personal-data processing under the GDPR and Slovak act 18/2018; complaints go to the data protection office, unlawful surveillance to the police.
  19. The registered operator must be at least 18. Remote pilots must be at least 16, except with a C0 toy in A1, a self-built drone under 250 g, or under direct supervision; minors fly under an adult's registration.
  20. Spare lithium batteries in cabin baggage only: up to 100 Wh without approval, 100 to 160 Wh with airline approval and two spares, over 160 Wh not allowed (IATA passenger guidance; airlines may be stricter).

Spare lithium batteries in cabin baggage only: up to 100 Wh without approval, 100 to 160 Wh with airline approval and two spares, over 160 Wh not allowed (IATA passenger guidance; airlines may be stricter).

Where the no-fly zones are published

The authority's own map is the one that counts on the day; an app is a convenience, not a source.

Since 31 March 2026: no open-category flights within 5 km of Bratislava, Košice, Piešťany, Poprad-Tatry and Žilina airports; in the rest of their control zones the open category flies only below 30 m. Aerodrome traffic zones need coordination with the aerodrome operator.

Travellers arriving from outside the EU must report and present goods to customs; the personal relief is 430 EUR by air or sea and 300 EUR otherwise. No drone-specific rule.
Import authorisation
None found on Finančná správa's traveller and business import pages.
Radio conformity
Radio equipment may operate only under an individual or general frequency authorisation. The regulator warns buyers that drones made for Asian or US markets have other technical parameters and may not be used in EU countries, with a risk of interference and loss of control.

On the ground

What pilots, police and the press report actually happening. This is evidence about behaviour, not law: it never changes the status above, and it is dated and linked so you can judge it yourself.

Patchy enforcement6 confirmed cases · 2017-09-11 to 2022-03 · practice pass 8 October 2026

Six dated cases, 2017 to 2022: pilots traced near airports and a military site, TANAP drones referred to inspectors. Fines are rare and small: 22 from the aviation authority in five years, two park fines of 20 EUR in all in 2025. No visitor, Slovenský raj, castle or customs case found; the record is old.

How people fly
Drones are common: about 26,000 operators in 2024 by the public broadcaster's count. A detection test around the national football stadium in Bratislava logged 625 drones from 4 to 24 June 2025, with no enforcement reported. TANAP says it sees dozens of unpermitted drones a year in the High Tatras and finds their footage on social networks. The confirmed cases are ordinary flights in the wrong place: over a hospital, by a castle inside an airport control zone, a drone lost near Bratislava airport, over a military object, near the crowd at a papal mass.
Police and rangers
The police do not fine drone offences: they record the case, may hold the drone, and pass it to the Transport Authority, which decides; they use the criminal procedure code only when a flight meets a crime's elements. Police traced pilots after flights over Košice hospital (2017), in Bratislava's airport control zone (2018) and by Zvolen castle in Sliač's control zone (2018); other airport cases went untraced. The military police traced people flying over a military object in the Nitra garrison in March 2022; the Defence Ministry counted 30 drone offences over military sites by July 2022 and 152 by early 2024, 32 with an identified pilot. Rangers may fine on the spot up to 300 EUR; in the Tatras they mostly refer drones: a 2018 TANAP patrol sent its drone cases to the environmental inspectorate. On the law block's registration problem for UK and US visitors: no case was found of a visitor being checked for a Slovak registration or for nature-authority consent, and the fines that reached the public are a few euros to a few hundred, far below the ceilings that make the rules read strict.
At the border
No usable report.
Fines actually reported
The Transport Authority imposed 22 drone fines totalling about 3,000 EUR in the five years to early 2024, and three in 2016 (two of 50 EUR, one of 150 EUR). ŠOP SR's rangers caught two drone flights over strictly protected areas in 2025 and fined them 20 EUR in total, on the spot. No forfeiture of a drone, no court case and no fine amount for any named case was located; the Defence Ministry's promised exemplary penalty in the 2022 Nitra case has no reported outcome.

The law's own penalty schedule is separate: Not established, 10 published fine ranges below.

Where reports cluster

  • High Tatras (TANAP)

Rangers see dozens of unpermitted drones a year and refer them and posted footage to the nature authority or the inspectorate; a 2018 patrol did so, and in August 2025 TANAP listed drone flights among the violations it handles more often. No individual sanction found.

  • Protected areas of the third to fifth degree, nationally

ŠOP SR's only located drone fines: two in 2025, 20 EUR in total, on the spot.

  • Airport control zones: Košice, Bratislava, Sliač

Pilots traced in 2017 and 2018, others untraced; no case since. Since 2026-03-31 open-category flying is banned within 5 km of five airports, introduced because of a growing number of drone flights near them. The Bratislava airport warning of January 2026 reported no case.

  • Military sites

Nitra garrison, March 2022: pilots traced by the military police. The ministry said in November 2025 that such cases were increasing.

  • Low Tatras, Chopok

A chamois kid fell to its death while a drone chased the herd, reported September 2019; the pilot was not identified and no enforcement was reported.

  • Bratislava, national football stadium

625 drones detected in three weeks of June 2025 during the under-21 European championship; no enforcement reported.

  • Slovenský raj, Pieniny, Spiš Castle, Bratislava Castle and old town, airport customs

No dated case found. Absence of a report is not evidence of tolerance.

Sources that disagree

  1. Whether DÚ accepts a plain passport copy from a visitor or requires an officially certified copy made abroad, and whether its payment order can be paid from a foreign account.
  2. Whether a UK or US resident can sit the Slovak A1/A3 online test (no residency bar is stated; the form is in Slovak), and which fee applies to it.
  3. Whether a pilot of a sub-250 g camera drone needs the A1/A3 test: DÚ's flowchart says no, the statute requires a certificate unless EU law says otherwise.
  4. How a visitor applies for nature-authority consent (form, fee, lead time) and whether recreational flights are ever granted it; where the fifth-degree zones lie.
  5. Park-specific visitor regulations of TANAP, Pieniny, Slovenský raj and the other parks; ŠOP SR's drone pages returned 404 and 503.
  6. The Ministry of Defence consent procedure for zones RUAS013M to RUAS098M.

  8. Whether a paid open-category drone flight counts as aerial work that needs a permit.
  9. The minimum insurance in euros (the law sets it in SDR).
  10. Criminal liability for drone flights; the criminal code was not read. The practice pass found no criminal case against a drone pilot; police say they act under the criminal procedure code only when a flight meets a crime's elements.
  11. The licence of DÚ's geozone KML dataset.
  12. Any drone-specific customs rule for travellers, and any Slovak battery carriage rule. The practice pass also found no case of customs or airport security checking or holding a traveller's drone.
  13. Rules at Spiš Castle and municipal rules in Bratislava. The practice pass found no enforcement report for Spiš Castle, Bratislava Castle or the old town either.
  14. Any individual drone case after March 2022. The newest records found are counts: ŠOP SR's two 2025 park fines (20 EUR in total) and the Defence Ministry's statement of November 2025 that cases over military sites are increasing.
  15. DÚ's drone fine figures after early 2024; the latest located total is 22 fines, about 3,000 EUR, over five years.
  16. The outcome of TANAP's referrals of drone flights to the environmental inspectorate and of the 2022 Nitra military-site case, and whether any drone has been forfeited under the nature act.
  17. Individual cases involving visiting pilots. None of the six confirmed cases gives a nationality and no figure on foreign pilots was found; the community record (Reddit, MavicPilots) refuses this project's tools and is unread.
