Liechtenstein

An EASA registration counts in Liechtenstein; UK and US pilots register on Switzerland's dLIS for CHF 10, which is valid there. Over 250 g carry CHF 1 million liability cover, keep Remote ID on, stay under 120 m, and check the Swiss drone map: Vaduz Castle and the Balzers heliport need an exemption.

Permits tied to a place or a time

These do not change the country's colour; they decide whether a particular flight is legal where and when you want it.

  • Geographic flight restrictions must be respected. A permit to fly inside a restricted area comes from the body responsible for that zone, not from FOCA, and Liechtenstein's zones are on the FOCA drone map layer.
  • Operations outside the open category need an authorisation. In Liechtenstein the Amt für Hochbau und Raumplanung grants authorisations for unmanned aircraft after FOCA checks the conditions.

Before you fly, in order

  1. Open and specific category flights may only be carried out by registered drone operators.
  2. A drone under 250 g still needs a registered operator if it has a camera, microphone or other sensor that can record personal data.
  3. An operator registered in any EASA member state flies in Liechtenstein on that registration, with no Liechtenstein procedure.
  4. The operator number (CHE plus 13 characters) must be clearly visible on every drone the operator flies. The final three characters are kept secret and not marked; drones themselves are not registered.
  5. Remote ID must be switched on during flight in the open and specific categories. Class C0, legacy and privately built drones are exempt.
  6. FOCA recommends liability insurance for lighter drones as well.
  7. Operations outside the open category need an authorisation. In Liechtenstein the Amt für Hochbau und Raumplanung grants authorisations for unmanned aircraft after FOCA checks the conditions.
  8. Open-category flights stay within 120 m of the nearest point on the ground.
  9. Assemblies of people may not be overflown in the open category. In A2 keep at least 30 m (5 m in low-speed mode) or the flight height from uninvolved people; in A3 keep 150 m from residential, commercial, industrial and recreational areas.
  10. Fly only within your own visual line of sight; flights beyond it are specific category and need an authorisation.
  11. Night flights are allowed within visual line of sight if the drone has position lights, with distances shortened for the reduced visibility.
  12. Geographic flight restrictions must be respected. A permit to fly inside a restricted area comes from the body responsible for that zone, not from FOCA, and Liechtenstein's zones are on the FOCA drone map layer.
  13. FPV is allowed outdoors only with an observer beside the pilot who keeps the drone in sight at all times; otherwise the flight is specific category.
  14. A camera drone recording identifiable people falls under the GDPR and Liechtenstein's data protection act unless the footage is purely for personal or family use. Recording publicly accessible spaces must be notified in writing to the Datenschutzstelle.
  15. The minimum remote pilot age is 12 in the open category and 14 in the specific category.
  16. Spare lithium batteries in cabin baggage only: up to 100 Wh without approval, 100 to 160 Wh with airline approval and two spares, over 160 Wh not allowed (IATA passenger guidance; airlines may be stricter).

Where the no-fly zones are published

The authority's own map is the one that counts on the day; an app is a convenience, not a source.

A drone over 250 g may not fly within 5 km of an aerodrome's runways or above 120 m in an active control zone without an exception. In Liechtenstein the Balzers heliport perimeter is closed to all drones and the wider LSXB zone to drones over 250 g.

On the ground

What pilots, police and the press report actually happening. This is evidence about behaviour, not law: it never changes the status above, and it is dated and linked so you can judge it yourself.

Too few confirmed reports to say0 confirmed cases · practice pass 8 October 2026

No dated case of a drone pilot stopped, fined or losing a drone was found: none in 1,515 police press releases from 2020 to 2026, ten police annual reports or the local press. Officials say drones are common and complaints come in. Nothing covers visitors, customs, Malbun or the nature reserves.

How people fly
Officials describe drones as common but no visitor account exists. A member of the Landtag wrote in September 2026 that drone flights over settlements, at events and for photo and video are regularly seen. The government created the Vaduz castle zone in 2017 because flights there kept increasing, and Tagblatt wrote that year that drones over crowds happen again and again. No first-person or press account of anyone flying at Malbun, Gaflei, Ruggeller Riet, the Alpine reserves or the Rhine was found.
Police and rangers
Enforcement is complaint-led. The Landespolizei takes reports on +423 236 71 11 and asks for time, place, direction, height and a photo; it said in 2018 that reports from people who feel disturbed or harassed by drones come in again and again. The government's answer of 2026-09-04 sends aviation questions to the civil aviation unit of the Amt für Hochbau und Raumplanung, privacy to the Datenschutzstelle and suspicious flights to the police, will not describe its detection means, and sees no need to act on enforcement. No case reached the police's press releases since July 2020, and no ranger or Naturwacht encounter was found. On the law block: no use of the Luftfahrtgesetz Art. 19 fine of up to CHF 50,000 has been reported, and Vaterland wrote in 2018 that sanctions come from FOCA. In 2017 Swiss Helicopter, based at the Balzers heliport, said its crews had seen drones near transport flights and that ground staff explain the distances to the pilots.
At the border
Liechtenstein has no airport and no customs border with Switzerland, so a visitor's drone passes Swiss or Austrian controls before it arrives. No case of customs holding a drone on the way to Liechtenstein was found in German or English.
Fines actually reported
None found. No fine, seizure, court case or warning involving a drone pilot appears in the police press releases from 2020 to 2026, the police annual reports from 2016 to 2025, the 2026 Landtag answer or the local press. The CHF 50,000 in the law block is the statutory ceiling, not a sum anyone was reported to pay.

The law's own penalty schedule is separate: Not established, 4 published fine ranges below.

Where reports cluster

  • Vaduz: government building, Landtag and Vaduz Castle

Permanent no-fly zone since 2017, set because drone flights around the three buildings kept increasing. A sign marks it at the castle, and the police remind visitors before the national day on 15 August that it applies then too. No case found.

  • Settlements and events

Where flights are reported as regular (Landtag question, 2026) and where police complaints come from (police, 2018). No outcome is reported.

  • Balzers heliport area

Parts of Balzers from the Rhine to the Fläscher Riet are a no-fly zone. In 2017 helicopter crews based at the heliport said they had seen drones near transport flights; where is not stated, and no case followed.

Dated reports

No dated report survived verification for Liechtenstein.

What the law says it costs

Published penalty ranges. What has actually been charged, where anyone reported it, is in the section above.

OffenceRangeSources
Carrying out an activity that needs an authorisation without it or against it, or ignoring an AHR order (Luftfahrtgesetz Art. 19)Fine up to CHF 50,000 from the Landgericht, up to six months' imprisonment if unpaid; the maximum is halved for negligenceS27
Flying a drone without the required liability insuranceA fine; no amount is statedS2
Flying a drone that does not bear the operator numberA fine; no amount is stated. FOCA calls flying with no operator number a criminal offence.S4S1
Unlawful camera-drone recording of people, or failing to notify recordings of public spaceGDPR fine regime (Art. 83 GDPR with Art. 40 DSG); a fine for intentionally breaching the notification dutyS36

Criminal liability: Breaches of the Liechtenstein aviation act are tried by the Landgericht as Übertretungen. Where the applicable Swiss aviation law provides for criminal courts, the procedure follows Articles 27 to 32 of the Swiss-Liechtenstein customs treaty. Recording someone's private or secret sphere with a device without consent can be a criminal offence under the law on the criminal protection of the personal secret sphere.

What we could not confirm

Printed rather than hidden. A brief that answers everything has usually guessed somewhere, and a gap here is a real gap in the official pages or a page we could not reach.

Sources that disagree

  1. Where a UK, US or other non-EASA visitor who flies only in Liechtenstein registers: FOCA documents dLIS for people who want to fly in Switzerland, and no Liechtenstein page was reachable.
  2. Registration processing time. No official page states it.
  3. Whether a recreational visitor is eligible for a Vaduz Castle exemption or a Balzers heliport permission, and in which language to apply.
  4. Whether the Vaduz zone in the FOCA dataset also covers the government and parliament buildings. The Landespolizei drone page, the government's 2017 decision and its 2026 answer to the Landtag all name the area Regierungsgebäude - Landtag - Schloss Vaduz, but the zone's geometry was not compared with them.
  5. Drone rules for the Alpine reserves, Malbun and Gaflei. No official page found, and the practice pass found no dated case or account of anyone flying there either.
  6. Customs declaration duty and import authorisation for a recreational drone.
  7. Who regulates drone radio equipment in Liechtenstein; the OFCOM premise is not confirmed.
  8. The geozone dataset licence. Not opened in this pass.
  9. The Swiss aviation act's CHF 20,000 fine ceiling. The FOCA webinar PDF returned HTTP 502 and the fedlex text did not render.
  10. Enforcement level, confiscation practice and any dated incident involving a visitor. The practice pass found no drone-pilot case of any kind in the Landespolizei's 1,515 press releases (2020-07 to 2026-10), its annual reports for 2016 to 2025, the Landtag record or the local press.
  11. Every llv.li page (AHR civil aviation pages, the drone news item, the aviation act reports) sits behind a Cloudflare challenge that blocked this pass; national zones or guidance published only there are not covered. The Wayback Machine holds no copy of the 2018 drone news item either.
  12. How many drone complaints the Landespolizei receives and how they end. No count appears in the 2016 to 2025 annual reports, and the government declined in 2026 to describe its detection means.
  13. The community and newspaper record. Reddit and MavicPilots refuse every client here, volksblatt.li returns HTTP 404 with no archived copy, and Vaterland articles stop at a registration wall after the lead, so a temporary national-day zone reported by Volksblatt and a 2016 Vaterland item on tourists filming wildlife were not read.
