Before you fly, in order

  1. A drone certificate from any EASA country, or a Danish certificate, is valid on the Faroe Islands and allows flight without prior permission; you must hold a certificate suitable for the drone you are flying.
  2. A drone up to 250 g needs no drone certificate; all other Faroese rules still apply.
  3. The operator must register a drone of any weight that carries a sensor able to record personal data, such as a camera, unless the drone is a toy.
  4. New drones placed on the market from 1 January 2025 must carry a C mark; from the same date distance requirements apply to non-C-marked drones over 250 g.
  5. Activating Remote ID requires operator registration, the operator number and a three-digit code.
  6. Insurance is not required for toy drones with a C0 mark, or for drones under 250 g without a C0 mark.
  7. Maximum altitude in the open category is 120 m above the terrain beneath the drone.
  8. Up to 15 m above a man-made structure exceeding 120 m is permitted with the structure owner's permission.
  9. The drone must remain within visual line of sight throughout the operation.
  10. Flight or attempted flight is prohibited if the pilot has consumed alcohol; breach is punishable by fine.
  11. Drone operations may not take place closer than 5 km horizontally from a runway at a publicly approved aerodrome. In practice this is Vágar Airport (Vága Floghavn).
  12. Drone operations may not take place closer than 2 km horizontally from a helicopter landing site (HEMS).
  13. No Faroe-specific lithium-battery allowance or prohibition exists in any source checked; airline and aviation-security rules govern.
  14. Spare lithium batteries in cabin baggage only: up to 100 Wh without approval, 100 to 160 Wh with airline approval and two spares, over 160 Wh not allowed (IATA passenger guidance; airlines may be stricter).

Spare lithium batteries in cabin baggage only: up to 100 Wh without approval, 100 to 160 Wh with airline approval and two spares, over 160 Wh not allowed (IATA passenger guidance; airlines may be stricter).

How a visitor gets legal

Each step as the authority describes it, with who may apply, what it costs and how long it takes.

  1. Step 1

Establish the drone's weight, sensors, class mark and category

Establish MTOM, whether the drone carries a camera or other personal-data sensor, its C mark, its category and the intended operation.

  3. Step 3

Under 250 g: no certificate, and no exception routes either

A drone up to 250 g needs no certificate. Treat that as a competency exemption only: registration, distance, season and property rules are unaffected, and the A2 exception routes are unavailable to you.

Local registrationRequired from 250 g. Cost: 65 DKK (2026).Registration is made with Trafikstyrelsen and yields a unique operator number. Three triggers, not one: MTOM of 250 g or more, the ability to transfer over 80 joules of kinetic energy to a person in a collision, or a sensor able to record personal data such as a camera, unless the drone is a toy. thresholdG records the MTOM trigger only, so a sub-250 g camera drone must still register. Processing time is unknown for the Faroe Islands: a Denmark-scoped geozone page states 30 days for geozone applications, does not mention the Faroe Islands and is not carried over. On the ground

What pilots, police and the press report actually happening. This is evidence about behaviour, not law: it never changes the status above, and it is dated and linked so you can judge it yourself.

Patchy enforcement5 confirmed cases, 1 we could not open, from 10 dated reports read · 2019-08-15 to 2025-09-22 · practice pass 7 October 2026

Police here do act on drone reports: in 2021 a foreign pilot was charged and his drone seized at a whale hunt, and another drone was shot down over one. Every case found involves a whale hunt, a warship or a complaint about flying near homes, and the most recent is from 2025.

How people fly
Visiting pilots use the islands as a landscape subject, and the dated guides tell them to launch from remote ground, hold 150 m off settlements, roads and groups, stay outside the Vágar Airport zone and keep off the bird colonies. The flights that actually reached the public record are different ones: drones over active whale hunts, and enough flying over homes and inside the airport zone by 2019 that the police asked residents to report sightings.
Police and rangers
The police take drone complaints and act on them. In August 2019 a duty officer said they were receiving several reports of illegal flying over residential areas and inside the 5 km airport zone, that it was often foreigners doing it, and asked the public to report sightings. In August 2021 they charged a foreign pilot who had hidden near Valaknúkur to film a whale hunt and seized his drone as evidence. Residents intervene too: a member of a hunting crew shot a drone down with a rifle over the hunt at Hvannasund in June 2021, after which the police investigated both the shooter and whether the pilot had permission to fly.
At the border
No dated report was located, in either direction, of customs or airport security at Vága Floghavn inspecting, declaring, holding, confiscating or refusing a personal drone. The one dated entry guide located tells travellers not to pack a drone without checking the applicable rules first.
Fines actually reported
No fine amount imposed on anyone was located, but a charge and a seizure were: in August 2021 a foreign national filming a whale hunt near Valaknúkur was charged with flying a drone without permission and his drone was seized as evidence, a seizure he contested in court. The DKK 5,000 figure the travel guides quote is a stated penalty rather than a reported outcome, and the 2025 Tórshavn case closed with no suspect identified.

The law's own penalty schedule is separate: Acted on sometimes, 5 published fine ranges below.

Where reports cluster

  • Any active grindadráp (whale hunt), wherever one is running

The one context with repeated enforcement. A drone over the hunt at Hvannasund was shot down with a rifle in June 2021 and the operator took it to the police himself; a second drone was seen over a hunt at Vestmannasund the same week, unshot; and in August 2021 a foreign pilot filming a hunt near Valaknúkur was charged and his drone seized. Hunts are called at short notice, so this is a condition to watch for rather than a place to avoid.

  • Vága Floghavn (Vágar Airport) and its 5 km zone

Both dated guides treat the zone as off limits to ordinary recreational flying, and one puts Trælanípa inside it. The police said in 2019 that flying inside the zone was among the things being reported to them.

  • Villages and residential areas

In 2019 the police said they were receiving several reports of drones over residential areas, asked the public to report sightings, and said it was often foreigners flying without permission. The order's own distance is 150 m.

  • Mykines

Two dated guides describe drones as banned outright because of the nesting colonies and the island's protected status. No dated enforcement report exists for the island.

  • Vestmanna bird cliffs

A dated photography guide says not to fly near the cliffs in the breeding season and frames it as both a rule and an ethical limit. No stop reported.

  • Múlafossur and Gásadalur

The most described drone viewpoint on the islands: the guidance is to launch from the cliff ground south of Gásadalur and hold 150 m off the village. No stop reported.

  • Sørvágsvatn and Trælanípa

One guide puts the whole area inside the 5 km Vágar Airport zone and calls drones prohibited there; the other lists Trælanípa among the paid hikes where drones are not flown.

  • Kallur lighthouse, Kalsoy

Listed with Trælanípa among the paid hikes where drones are not allowed. This is one line in one dated guide, not an incident, and it is the only evidence located for the site.

  • Tórshavn

The only place with a dated police action: a drone over a docked French warship in September 2025, investigated and closed with no suspect identified.

  • Ramsar sites, including Nólsoy and Skúvoy

Two dated guides describe them as closed to drones because of the birdlife.

Dated reports

  • 2019-08-15 · Residential areas and the 5 km zone around Vága Floghavn · press

The police said publicly that they were receiving several reports of illegal drone flying, over residential areas and closer than 5 km to the airport. The duty officer, Tina Jacobsen, said it was often foreigners flying without permission, though not only foreigners.

The police appealed to the public to report drone sightings. No fine, charge or confiscation is described in the report. report

  • 2021-06-27 · Hvannasund · press

A drone was flying above an active grindadráp when a member of the hunting crew shot it down with a rifle. The pilot, a foreign visitor, took the drone to the police himself and reported the shooting.

The police opened an investigation covering both sides: where the drone was in relation to the hunt, which rules applied to it, who fired, whether anyone was endangered, and whether the pilot's permission to fly was in order. No charge or fine appears in the coverage located. report

  • 2021-06 · Vestmannasund · press

A second drone was noticed over a whale hunt later in the same week as the Hvannasund shooting.

No shots were fired at this one. No further action is reported. report

  • 2021-08-10 · Valaknúkur, Skálafjørður · press

A Nordic foreign national, already known in connection with whale hunts, hid near Valaknúkur to film a grindadráp with a drone.

He was charged with flying a drone without permission and the drone was seized as evidence. He contested the seizure, which was going before the court on the day the report was published, 11 August 2021. The outcome of that review was not located. report

  • 2025-09-22 · Tórshavn harbour · press

A drone was flown for about twenty minutes over a French warship docked in Tórshavn. The vessel's crew reported it on the evening of 22 September and described a person near the National Hospital they took for the operator. Nothing establishes who flew it or whether it was a recreational flight.

The police investigation was reported closed on 27 November 2025 without identifying a suspect. No arrest, fine or confiscation. report

What we could not confirm

Printed rather than hidden. A brief that answers everything has usually guessed somewhere, and a gap here is a real gap in the official pages or a page we could not reach.

Sources that disagree

  1. UK and US certificate and registration recognition: no official page extends the recognition statement to UK or FAA credentials, and none states non-recognition.
  2. Whether a non-resident can register as a UAS operator online, and what identity documents, address, MitID or local phone number a non-resident applicant must supply.
  3. Registration processing time for the Faroe Islands.
  4. Night-flight conditions: no Faroe source examined states any.
  5. FPV, including FPV with a spotter: the authority's FPV page is Denmark-scoped and not referenced by the Faroe rule page.
  6. Declaration of a drone on entry, temporary import authorisation, and any customs confiscation or detention policy for drones.
  7. Radio-conformity requirement for a drone bought abroad.
  8. Documents a non-resident should carry, as a legal requirement rather than prudent practice.
  9. Geozone dataset format, licence and update cadence: the official map publishes no GeoJSON, KML or shapefile download, no licence statement and no revision date.
  10. All fine amounts in DKK: no tariff, schedule or range appears in any instrument checked.
  11. Any penalty attached specifically to flying uninsured, and any dedicated penalty for breach of property or local access conditions.
  12. Confiscation powers outside aviation law: customs and police powers were not examined.
  13. Whether breaches of BEK 114 carry their own penalty or only the Aviation Act's.
  14. The Remote ID obligation's exact reach over legacy non-C-marked drones.
  15. The practical availability of geozone permission to a non-resident.
  16. Every named site: Mykines and its bird cliffs and possible landing fee, Vestmanna, Múlafossur and Gásadalur, Sørvágsvatn and Trælanípa, Kallur lighthouse on Kalsoy, Saksun, Tjørnuvík, and any sheep or lambing-season restriction. No Umhvørvisstovan, municipal or site-operator source exists in the evidence, and no source maps any of these places to a protected area.
  17. Park or protected-area permit fees: the only confirmed figure is the authority's 1,300 DKK per hour processing rate, which is not a site fee.
  18. Community reality reports: no dated pilot report with a URL was located for any site, and none for enforcement, confiscation or a tourist fine. The absence of reports is not evidence that enforcement is absent.

Application for flying in geographical drone zones

    Trafikstyrelsen · document dated 2025-08-28 · opened 2026-10-07

The expected processing time is 30 days.; The fee is billed at a rate of 1,100 DKK per hour

Procedural page, Denmark-scoped. Retained for the audit trail and not relied on for any Faroese field: it does not mention the Faroe Islands, it is built around MitID, and its hourly rate conflicts with the fee schedule that does name the Faroe Islands.

Spørgsmål og svar (retired Q&A page)

    Trafikstyrelsen · opened 2026-10-07

Dead, HTTP 404. The research pass's citation [1]. The quote it hung its territorial claim on, that the rules do not apply to Greenland and the Faroe Islands, does not appear on the live FAQ that replaced this page, which says the opposite. Backs no claim in this file.

Dead, HTTP 404. The research pass's citation [3]. The page moved to /operations-outside-denmark/ and was recovered there as S1, so no claim was lost, but the original citation does not resolve. Backs no claim in this file.

Drone Incident Over French Warship in Tórshavn Concludes Without Arrests

Faroe Islands Daily · document dated 2025-11-27 · opened 2026-10-07

The alleged drone activity was reported by the crew of the French vessel on the evening of September 22; the investigation led by Kári Jacobsen did not result in identifying any suspects.

The practice pass's only confirmed incident. The research pass cited the paginated category index instead, which now holds December 2025 items and no drone item; this permalink was recovered through the outlet's own drone search.

Drone Laws in Denmark (2026): Rules, Fines, Urban Ban

    DronesGator · document dated 2026-03 · opened 2026-10-07

Ramsar-protected areas (Mykines, Nolsoy, Skuvoy) ban drones completely.

Cited only for the Ramsar and Mykines ban it corroborates. Its Faroese section also claims EU certificates are not valid here and a 100 m ceiling, both contradicted by the authority's own page (S1), so nothing else on it is relied on.

Faroe Islands Visa and Entry Guide

Travel With Hello · document dated 2026-07-08 · opened 2026-10-07

Do not pack meat, animal products, plants, medicines, drones, or unusually large quantities without checking the applicable rules.

The only dated page located that mentions a drone at the border at all. It does not say drones are generally acceptable as personal belongings and does not mention receipts, so the research pass's reading of it was dropped.
